All the World's a Stage
Monday-Thursday: June 11-14; 9–11:30 am

Not all artists create art for a frame in a museum. Some use their creativity to make costumes, stage sets, and props in a theater. We will draw inspiration from illustrations featuring stories by William Shakespeare as we learn to create artistic costumes and props for a short play of our own.




Small Fry Sculpture
Monday-Thursday: June 18-21; 9–11:30 am
Joslyn Members: $50; General Public $60

This camp will teach small fries to become sculptors. We will spend time in the sculpture garden looking at the different materials and tools artists use to create sculpture before using clay, wood, and other media materials to create three-dimensional artworks.




Telling Stories
Monday-Thursday: July 30-August 2; 9–11:30 am
Joslyn Members: $50; General Public $60

A picture is worth a thousand words, and this camp will teach students to use their art to tell a story. We’ll look at an exhibition of illustrations featuring characters like Puss in Boots and other adventurous animals before learning to use watercolor, colored pencil, and paint to tell our tales.




All Aboard!
Monday-Thursday: August 6-9; 9–11:30 am

We’ll ride the rails in this camp that will gain steam from an exhibition featuring images of trains and tracks from Union Pacific. Students will learn about perspective and use a variety of materials to create train-themed paintings and sculptures.

Snack provided. Campers should bring lunch and drink.

Each one day camp will introduce a different all-star artist from Joslyn's collection. We will spend time in the gallery looking at each artist's artwork. Then, in the studio, we'll take a look at books and videos to learn more about the lives of each artist and their creativity before creating art of our own.

The Art of Theater Design

Spend mornings at The Rose and walk to Joslyn for afternoons of exploring the exciting world of theatrical design! We will discover what it takes to make scenery, costume, props, lighting, and sound for The Rose’s productions; meet professional designers and technicians; and create lots of hands-on theatrical designs! We will also explore a gallery featuring book illustrations about William Shakespeare and create art in the studios.

Learn all you need to know about making great art in this painting and sculpture camp. Learn the tricks of the trade artists use to make art look beautiful, realistic, or wild. We will look at great artworks in the gallery before using the art elements to create masterful paintings and sculptures of our own.

Art in the Spotlight

This camp will teach you about the artists working behind the scenes in a theater. We will gain inspiration from illustrations in the gallery featuring stories by William Shakespeare before creating costumes, props, and stage sets in the studio. We’ll even walk to The Rose Theater for a backstage tour and to watch a play rehearsal.

Follow along with the Newbery Award-winning story From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler and discover behind-the-scenes secrets of Joslyn Art Museum. Camp will begin with a day spent at Joslyn Castle, home of the Museum’s namesakes. In the studio, we’ll create art full of magic and mystery while dabbling in drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture.

You’ll outdraw your mom or dad after this camp that will teach the fundamentals needed to become a great drawer. We will use pencil, charcoal, ink, and more while learning to capture perspective and proportion and creating still lifes, portraits, abstractions, and even cartoons.

When it comes to art, “mixed media” means “anything goes.” In this camp you’ll use everything but the kitchen sink to create art. We will combine skills like drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, and more to create mixed media artworks.

Gain strength from artworks in the gallery as they guide our painting practice in the studio. We will use watercolor, tempera, and acrylic to discover the difference between each. We’ll explore beyond a paintbrush to make art with everything from a twig to a toothbrush.

Travel through time as you look at artworks in the gallery that are hundreds or thousands of years old. We will make art with inspiration from ancient Greek pottery, paintings of life in the Renaissance, abstract jazz-like compositions, and more.

Build, carve, mold, and model a three-dimensional work of art in this sculpture camp. We will roam the galleries and sculpture garden to find different kinds of sculpture materials and techniques in order to get ideas for our sculptures in the studio.

In this camp we will visit a special exhibition of contemporary landscapes, where artists create images of the land as you might see in a dream, on TV, or maybe on a billboard. In the studio you’ll create funky visions of landscapes in a canvas painting.

Learn to create with real “art style” by looking at how some of the world’s best artists approached their subjects. See Monet’s impressionistic paintings of landscapes, examine super-realistic paintings of people and things, and look at jazzy expressionistic drips of paint. In the studio, you’ll find your own sense of style as you dabble in each.

Make millions of images in this class that will teach you printmaking techniques used to reproduce an image over and over. We will cut stencils to use for spray-paint paintings, carve blocks to make stamps, and build printing plates to make prints.

Model Trains as Art

A lot that goes into making model trains can be considered art, whether it’s sculpting a mountain with a tunnel, making tiny people, constructing a house or even painting a miniature billboard. In this camp you build houses, make trees, mountains and more to contribute to a collaborative model railroad then use a camera to capture images like those we will see in a special exhibition that documents the history of the Union Pacific Railroad.

Art museums have lots of animals, like a zoo - but we don’t have to feed them. We will take a look at all kinds of animals in the gallery including illustrations from Puss in Boots and other adventurous tales featuring tigers, crocodiles, and ferrets. In the studio we’ll use papier mâché, paint, and more to create artsy animals of our own.

Oil Painting

This camp will teach the basics of oil painting. Learn to use a brush, palette knife, and layers of color to create accurate painting studies. This class will meet at Creighton University’s painting studio.

Drawing Skills

Learn to draw like an artist in this class that will use a variety of drawing media including pencil, charcoal, and pen and ink. We’ll draw inside and outside the Museum as we learn to accurately render proportion, perspective, mass, and value.

Wheel-Thrown Ceramics

Learn to manipulate clay on the potter’s wheel to create functional wares. Held at Omaha Clay Works in the Old Market, a working clay studio home to nearly a dozen clay artists, this two-week camp will allow you to take your time as you learn each step of making a pot with guidance and encouragement from your instructors.

Pastels in the Garden

Get your hands dirty in this camp that will teach you the skills to blend, smear, and smudge pastels to create stylized flowers and plants. This camp will meet at Lauritzen Gardens and use their beautiful displays for inspiration as you learn to use chalk and oil pastels.

Abstract Painting

Get loose in this camp that will encourage you to think beyond what is seen in the natural world. Lean to abstract your surroundings and express your ideas using a variety of acrylic techniques, tools, and materials.

Hand-Built Ceramics

Create functional and sculptural artworks from clay using just simple tools and your own two hands. We will experiment with surface design using wax resists, sgraffito carving, and even screen-printed designs.
