Adult & Teen Classes

Adult and teen classes are taught by community artists who have personal and creative experience within their areas of instruction. Students are eligible to attend these classes at the age of 13. Advance registration is required and all necessary materials and supplies are provided.

Drawing & Painting: Glazing in Layers
Sundays: June 3, 10, 17, 24; 1-3:30 pm
Joslyn Members: $70; General Public: $80



Create several small paintings as you learn to combine drawing and painting techniques. Students will use water-soluble pencils on gesso to create value and mass before applying layers of acrylic paint to better understand color theory and optical blending.

Basic Digital Photography @ Lauritzen Gardens

Learn the ins and outs of your digital camera and how to its functions o to their fullest potential. Learn to control your shutter speed, aperture, and how to use pre-sets like “pets and children” to your advantage. Students must bring a digital camera.

Wheel-Thrown Ceramics

Use the potter’s wheel to create functional forms from hunks of moist clay in this class held at Creighton University’s ceramic studio. Tailored instruction will allow new potters to achieve success on the wheel and encourage experienced potters to experiment with new techniques. Open studio hours will allow you to experiment and practice at your own pace.

Basic Drawing

This class will introduce basic drawing concepts and techniques to new students and hone the skills of experienced artists. Students will experiment with a variety of drawing tools, including graphite and charcoal, while learning to render proportion, value, and perspective.

Traditional Landscapes in Oil
Thursdays: June 7, 14, 21, 28, July 5, 12; 6-8 pm

Learn the basics of oil painting while you create an academic landscape painting. Students will learn to compose a landscape composition with interest and to mix and manipulate paint using glazes and other oil painting techniques.

Jewelry Design
Saturdays: June 23, 30, July 7, 14, 21; 9:30 am-12:30 pm

This class will teach basics skills needed to create uniquely beaded jewelry. Skills presented in each class will build, so a simple progression can be made as students learn to create fringe bracelets and peyote stitch designs.

Watercolor @ Lauritzen Gardens

Explore Lauritzen’s many beautiful gardens while learning basic watercolor techniques. Experience wet-on-wet, dry brush, and other techniques, while learning to use tools like masking agents and specific brush strokes.

Digital Photography: Off the Rails

Go beyond the basics and begin to see the world like a photographer in this class that will teach composition and abstraction. Inspired by a collection of photographs from Union Pacific we will visit the old Union Station, now The Durham, to shoot the impressive building and rail cars on display. Students must bring a digital camera.

Modern Nebraska Landscapes in Oil
Saturdays: July 14, 21, 28, August 4, 11; 9:30 am-noon

Go beyond the academic in this oil painting class that will assist you in developing a landscape composition with a focus on abstraction, expression, and color. This class will combine plein air painting with work in the studio. Although minds-eye and memory will be addressed, all compositions will begin from observation while painting under a beautiful Nebraska sky – at the edge of town. We’ll return to the studio to refine our observations.

Life Drawing

Learn advanced drawing techniques as you draw the figure. This class will teach sighting techniques and other skills used to accurately render the figure while observing a nude model. Written permission required for students under age 18.
